This series reflects Jonathan Prince’s sustained fascination with the aesthetic and conceptual possibilities of interrupted surfaces. While fracturing is a natural characteristic of stone, it is fundamentally foreign to steel, a material defined by its structural integrity and resistance. As Prince’s practice has increasingly engaged with steel fabrication, he has developed an innovative technique to emulate the distinctive ruptures found in stone. This process, which he terms “Torn Steel,”creates the illusion of a fractured surface within an otherwise seamless metal form. The resulting works inhabit a compelling tension between material strength and visual vulnerability, challenging conventional expectations of both medium and form.
