The GAVIN Sculpture Series is an ongoing body of figurative works exploring themes of resilience, vulnerability, and the evolving human condition. Constructed from steel, resin, and industrial materials, each Gavin figure is designed to be both powerful and transparent—open structures that reflect the fragility and strength we carry within. The Gavin series began as my own contemporary re-imagining of the Sisyphus myth—a story that has followed humanity for centuries. In the ancient tale, Sisyphus is condemned to push a boulder up a hill for eternity, only to watch it slip from his grasp each time he nears the summit. What struck me wasn’t the punishment, but the quiet, enduring truth inside it: that meaning is found not in the unreachable peak, but in the act of pushing itself. Gavin emerged from that realization—an illuminated figure caught between stillness and motion, defined not by triumph but by persistence. His slight lean forward, the tension in his frame, the suggestion of effort—all reflect our own daily struggles, the weight we carry, and the inner momentum that keeps us moving. Gavin is all of us, pushing our symbolic boulders, discovering purpose in the climb rather than the finish..These sculptures travel across the U.S. and Europe as temporary installations in public squares, cultural districts, and international music festivals, creating a dialogue between place, time, and identity. Whether standing alone on a coastal promenade or within the energetic rhythm of a city, Gavin invites passersby to pause, reflect, and connect.
This sculpture (Gavin #10 Aspiration) is roughly 10' 4" with base. The sculpture is created from around 100 recycled engine and drive train parts which were discarded in the process of building racing engines. Most of the parts are axle gears, transmission gears, timing chains and gears, cams, lifters, induction parts, pistons, rods, and shafts. All of the parts came from engine build shops sourced locally in Indiana. In addition, I have used Caterpillar bulldozer threaded rods and bolts, along with 3/16 carbon steel rod. The base is made from Granite and stainless steel.
